Kelly Casper graduated cum laude from Wayne State University with a B.A. in 2000. While at Wayne State she was on the Dean’s List and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society. Kelly attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law where she received a Cavanagh Scholarship for academic excellence. She also was inducted into the Order of Barristers and Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. While attending law school, Ms. Casper was active in the school’s moot court program, winning numerous moot court competitions.
While attending law school, she worked full-time as a law clerk/paralegal at Grotefeld & Denenberg LLC, gaining extensive insurance subrogation experience. She was the primary point person for a major residential property insurer and also worked on commercial subrogation cases. Upon admittance to the State Bar of Michigan, she became an associate attorney at the firm.
Ms. Casper also has worked in the State and Local Tax practice at Ernst & Young where she gained experience in income/franchise tax, tax incentives, sales and use tax, and property tax issues. After leaving Ernst and Young, Ms. Casper opened her own practice. Ms. Casper acted as “of counsel” to a firm that specialized in municipal and labor law and also defended members of the Detroit Police Officers Association (DPOA) on a contract basis, representing DPOA members in criminal and internal matters. Additionally, she maintained her own clients in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation.
Ms. Casper, in 2011, accepted a position as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Arson Unit of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. While in the Arson Unit, Ms. Casper prosecuted arson for profit, retaliatory arson and homicide cases that involved media coverage and complex issues. While in the Arson Unit, Ms. Casper attended the fire school held in Tustin, Michigan and also participated in other trainings related to fire and fraud. She was also a member of the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee.
During her tenure in the Arson Unit, Ms. Casper assisted in changing Michigan’s arson laws by testifying to the necessity of the changes before committee in Lansing. Once the legislation was enacted into law, Ms. Casper worked with her office to correct any parts of the legislation that needed amendment. After the Arson Unit, Ms. Casper was assigned to the Community Prosecution Unit, where she vertically prosecuted non-fatal shootings within the City of Detroit. She also assisted the Public Integrity Unit, which reviews allegations of misconduct, corruption, or other criminal activity where the suspect is a public official or police officer. Many of Ms. Casper’s cases were media cases. During her career at the prosecutor’s office, she was often on call 24/7 and aggressively prosecuted violent offenders, while seeking justice for victims.
Ms. Casper continues to support law enforcement, particularly the Detroit Police Department, by volunteering for various events and fundraisers, including the annual DPOA golf outing and fundraisers for officers that need assistance. She continues to volunteer time to assist with court related training for fire investigators. As well, Kelly, volunteers in the Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital of Michigan assisting patients and their families.
With ten years of experience, Ms. Casper joins Hewson & Van Hellemont, P.C. with an aggressive approach to litigating property insurance matters and the experience of handling complex cases and matters that may be receiving community or media attention. She joined the firm in 2015 and is also a member of the MDTC-Michigan Defense Trial Counsel.
