Michael M. Carey joined Hewson & Van Hellemont as one of the four original members in 1991, after practicing with co-founding partner Jerry Van Hellemont since 1986. In 1996 he became a partner in the firm, and since 2013 has been managing partner at the firm’s Oak Park office.
Mr. Carey has been fortunate to have practiced along most lines of insurance coverage including commercial insurance personal lines. He also has focused most acutely on fraudulent claim issues and coverage issues including rescission and insurable interest. Mr. Carey’s experience includes more than 100 civil trials.
Mr. Carey is active in the International Association of Arson and Theft Investigators, Michigan Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators, International Association of Special Investigation Units and the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee, where for the last year he also has been counsel to the Executive Board.
He earned his J.D. in 1986 from Detroit College of Law, and his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1983. He is admitted to the bars of Michigan, Michigan Eastern and Western Districts of the Federal District Court, and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals where he has practiced at both the trial and appellate level.
